Coastal Sand Cliffs and Beach - California

South of San Francisco is Half Moon Bay. This is the start of a series of sandy beaches and towering cliffs, higher than these shown here. The clifs are fragile and eroded by high seas. You can make out the vegetation clinging precariously along the clifftops

Beyond the blue hills at the top of the picture lies the upper end of Silicon Valley and san Francisco.

The Image

When I first took this picture, I wanted to "contain" the ocean, show the distant coastline, as well as give the feeling of the cliffs in front of me.

To capture the feeling and shape of the cliff faces, and the sense of the sea's foam, I used a Photoshop Watercolor filter. Before applying the filter, the photo image must be lightened enough to offset the darkening effect of the filter.
