Fall Colors and Snow LIne
Banff National Park, Alberta

Driving north from Calgary into Banff National Park, in early October, I was given a perfect autumn day for this picture (and many others). Here we see the residual snow on the southern Canadian Rockies, and the late afternoon sun spotlighting the autumn leaves.

The Image

Interestingly, the straight photograph of this scene did not capture the feeling that prompted me to take it. The foreground leaves were not in focus, and the busy detail of the hillside took away from the snowline.

By sharpening (Unsharp Mask) the image of the glowing fall color leaves, then applying the Photoshop Cutout filter, I was able to bring back the crispness of the edges of the autumn leaves, and simplify the detail around the snowline.
