Surprisingly few people know what this open space is. Most just hurtle across it, along Culver Boulevard, to and from work, to the beach, to the next property for sale, intense in conversation on cell phones, eyes focused on the car in front.
 
So when masses of high-density condominiums and offices were developed on this critical part of the health of Los Angeles habitat, only those who could see what was being lost actually noticed, or cared.
